Worth Feasibility Evaluation: a Tool to Plan and Track Innovative Product Development

This paper describes a method for conducting worth feasibility evaluation (WFE) in innovative product development. The method uses an enhanced quality function deployment matrix to identify the effects of multiple, possibly conflicting, engineering solutions on the product attributes being developed. The WFE allows product developers to assess whether their proposed engineering approach to executing the product development represents a viable path towards offering a product of high worth to the customer and the company. Worth feasibility evaluation then couples with a cost feasibility evaluation to assess whether the product will be able to produce high value for the customer and the company, and aids product development progress tracking and risk management. Two case studies are presented to demonstrate the capability of the WFE method.
